How to rotate your food storage (first in, first out)
Updated · 5 min read

Food storage is only useful if it's still good when you need it. Rotation means using the oldest food first and replacing it, so nothing sits until it's past its best.
First in, first out
Grocery stores do it, and it works at home too: new purchases go to the back (or the top of a can rack), and you always take from the front. The oldest food gets eaten first.
Date everything
- Write the month and year on each can, box or bucket with a marker when it comes home.
- Big, easy-to-read dates beat the tiny printed codes.
- For home-canned food, write the date it was canned.
How long things keep
| Food | Best quality |
|---|---|
| Canned fruit, tomatoes, juice (high acid) | 12–18 months |
| Canned meat, vegetables, soup (low acid) | 2–5 years |
| Home-canned food | within 1 year |
| Pasta, white rice (in the package) | 1–2 years |
| White rice, beans, oats (sealed with oxygen absorbers) | 20–30 years |
These are quality guides, not safety cut-offs. Throw out any can that's bulging, leaking, badly dented on a seam or rusted through, and any jar whose lid has come unsealed.
Eat from your storage
- Plan one or two meals a week around the oldest things in storage.
- Keep a small "use soon" bin for anything getting close.
- Only store food your household likes - it's much easier to rotate.
Check it a few times a year
Twice a year is a good rhythm (some people use the daylight saving time changes as a reminder). Look for damage and pests, pull anything getting old into this month's meals, and write down what to restock.
