Have your own AI? Here's how to use it with InventoryImp
Updated
If you already pay for Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant, you can put it to work with InventoryImp - free, on any plan, because your own AI subscription does the thinking. There are two ways.
1. Connect it, and talk to your kitchen
Connect InventoryImp to Claude or ChatGPT once, and then ask it things in a normal chat:
- "What can I make for dinner with what's in my pantry?"
- "What's about to expire this week?"
- "Add eggs, milk and coffee to our grocery list."
- "Put the chili recipe on Thursday's dinner."
- "I used the last of the rice."
In Claude
- Open Customize → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
- Use the address
https://www.inventoryimp.com/mcp. - Sign in to InventoryImp when asked, and allow it.
In ChatGPT
- On the web, with Plus or higher, turn on Developer mode under Settings → Security and login.
- Add an app with the address
https://www.inventoryimp.com/mcp. - Sign in to InventoryImp when asked.
What it can see and do
- See: your inventory (including what's expiring or low), what you can make, your recipes, grocery lists and meal plan. Never a housemate's personal items.
- Do, when you ask: add to or check off your grocery list, mark something as used, and add a recipe to your meal plan. Nothing else - it can't delete anything.
- To disconnect, remove InventoryImp in Claude's or ChatGPT's connector settings.
2. Use any AI to bring things in, free
Some of InventoryImp's imports can take a tidy list from any AI - ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or another. The app gives you the exact instructions to copy, so the AI's answer comes back in a form InventoryImp can read. You check everything before it's saved.
One recipe
- Recipes → Import → Use your own AI - free, and tap the button to copy the prompt.
- Paste it into your AI with the recipe's link or text.
- Paste the AI's answer back into InventoryImp, check the recipe and save it.
Lots of recipes
Ask your AI to write your recipes out the same way and save them as a JSON file, then use Recipes → Import → Several at once and choose the file. They're saved as private recipes in one go.
A list of food (moving from another app)
- Inventory → Add items → More → Import → Paste a list, and copy the import prompt.
- Give your AI the prompt plus your list - copied from another app, a note or a spreadsheet.
- Paste its answer back, check the items and save them.
